On the morning of April 28, 2025, a large-scale blackout affected continental Portugal and parts of Spain. For almost ten hours, transportation, communications, essential services and commercial activities were interrupted. The origin of the failure is still being investigated, but the impact was immediate: we were left without energy, without forecasts and without guarantees.
The episode brought up an important question: to what extent are we dependent on the public electrical grid — and prepared to deal with its failure?
The growing demand for residential self-consumption solutions goes beyond saving on the electricity bill. It's also about ensuring continuity in unexpected situations like the one we recently experienced.
Electricity production with solar photovoltaic panels is already an accessible reality in Portugal. But it's with storage in batteries — like the Tesla Powerwall — that true energy autonomy is achieved. These batteries allow storing excess solar energy to be used at night or during grid failures.
Even in "off-grid" mode, it's possible to keep essential equipment running: refrigerator, lighting, communications, among others. In critical moments, this reserve can make all the difference.
The April blackout served as a warning. It showed that depending exclusively on the public grid is risky and that individual preparation can be decisive. Investing in self-consumption solutions with storage is, increasingly, a form of protection — both for residences and businesses.
At Geoclima, we help those who seek more than energy: we seek to guarantee continuity, safety and peace of mind.
