Portugal, alongside Spain, has one of the largest solar resources in Europe, with an annual average global radiation of 1600 to 2200 kWh/m². With a robust strategic vision in the photovoltaic solar energy sector, the country has made impressive progress. Since 2020, installed solar energy capacity has increased fivefold, from 1076 MW to 5005 MW, and in 2024, Portugal has already registered 1.1 GW of new projects, maintaining steady growth.
The goal is to reach 20.8 GW of capacity by 2030, with an increasing focus on decentralised solutions and energy communities. To ensure the success of this transition, the Portuguese government is investing in storage, long-term contracts and electricity grid infrastructure, preparing the country for a sustainable energy future. The goal is to achieve a new record for solar generation, overcoming current challenges and moving forward with innovative solutions for a greener and more resilient future.
Solar photovoltaics in Portugal has great growth potential, and the government's actions, together with the interest of industry players, point to positive developments towards the ambitious targets set.
