Record electricity consumption in Portugal and the decisive role of solar energy

Portugal recorded a historic consumption record in the first half of 2025, but it's the growth of renewable energy – especially solar – that brings hope and opportunity.

1. Historic record in electricity consumption

From January to June, 26,229 GWh were consumed, surpassing the 2010 maximum by about 240 GWh; the increase was 2.2% compared to 2024.

2. Renewables dominate the energy mix

In the semester's accumulated total, renewables supplied 77% of consumption:

     • Hydro: 36%
     • Wind: 26%
     • Solar: 11%
     • Biomass: 5%

3. June: solar equals wind

Even with unfavorable weather, renewables maintained 55% of national production.

For the first time, solar achieved participation equivalent to wind, with daily peaks above 3,200 MW.

4. Solar energy: continuous growth and real impact

Solar is gaining prominence: it grew consistently in the semester and became one of the most relevant sources in the mix.

This advance reinforces security and energy independence, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and imports.

5. Opportunities for businesses and individuals

This reality reinforces the importance of investing in solar solutions, such as:

     • Photovoltaic installations (residential and business).
     • Connected electric chargers.
     • Storage systems (batteries).
     • Intelligent consumption management (cloud, OCPP), to take advantage of lower prices, self-sufficiency and sustainability.

Portugal is on a clear path of energy transition. Solar energy shows itself as a strategic pillar — vibrant, growing and essential. At Geoclima, we're ready to help: with robust and integrated solutions to be part of this change.
